Phase 4: Production Engineering

For high-value products made in small series the step from prototype to production can be very small, and for injection-moulded consumables it can be the largest part of the project.

In phase 4 we will help you finalise arrangements with suppliers and contract manufacturers. Post-prototype modifications - either due to customer-trial feedback or production considerations - need to be implemented and documented.

We will arrange for the required product testing such as EMC/EMI or noise emission, support customer trials, and adapt our product documentation pack for inclusion in your Technical File for regulatory approval.

In many cases preparation for series production will mean making significant investments in mould tooling or assembly lines - the higher the investment in tooling, the more certain we need to be there will be no further modifications. For some products, pilot series will be built using prototype tooling.

Once production starts it'll be up to you to start selling the product!

Acting as your outsourced product development team is our main activitity. But we will also be happy to use our skills to assist you in other ways:

• Interim/part-time management

  In many cases product development work does not only consist of clearly defined projects leading to a specific product. If you're a science-based startup, you might want to regularly get engineering and design input. You might need to fill a gap when your product development manager leaves. Or you might temporarily have more projects then you can handle.

• Cost reduction exercises

  Your product might be popular but with a high production cost it does not generate enough profit. We're probably able to come up with cost-saving changes or find lower-cost suppliers - No savings, no charge.

• Customer trials

  I've been involved in a number of user trials of breakthrough products, and know how much additional workload this can bring. With both technical and commercial experience I might be able to help you get optimal value from these trials.

• Technology assesment

  Need an expert opinion on a product you consider licensing? A design review or technical due diligence? Looking for alternative suppliers or scout for specific enabling technology?
